Wind Races!
March
27TH, 2010
Storm
Wind made his debut a bit later than expected, as his first race
got rained out when the afternoon races were cancelled a few weeks
ago. Storm Wind made his debut in a 5 1/2 furlong maiden claiming
race at Gulfstream Park. I was unable to see the race, as TVG
does not carry Gulfstream. From reading the results, it seems
as though he was never quite in it.
Interestingly
enough, it does not seem as though the jockey was to blame, as
jockey Paco Lopez
won 4 straight the day before.
"Jockey
Paco Lopez was on a roll Thursday afternoon at Gulfstream Park
winning four straight races from the second through fifth events
and none of the winners was favored, returning $9.40, $14.20,
$11.00 and $41.20 for $2, respectively."
The
DRF and track handicapper did not have Storm Wind picked to win.
DRF
Analysis:
Fifth
Race: 1. Crack Thepat 2. Expedition
3. Raising Timber
CRACK THEPAT no match for in form Barge in her
local bow and wanted no part of MSW opposition or seven furlongs
in his last. Back to more suitable spot and distance today. May
outclass these with the right trip. EXPEDITION
a big question mark having had just one career start and that
coming on grass here two years earlier. Has changed hands and
will also change surfaces for his return. Miss several weeks of
reported works from 2/18 through 3/14 but must respect enough
to warrant close attention at this level. RAISING TIMBER
a beaten favorite in each of his last three starts and showing
no reported works for nearly four weeks. Obvious factor but has
too many questions to answer at another short price.
Track
Handicapper Analysis:
Race
Five by Mike Costanzo – Selections: 5-4-6
#5 Crack Thepat was a good second two starts
ago when meeting $50k rivals, and his most recent run with MSW
company was actually rather good considering the level of competition
he was meeting, which included a couple of return winners. He
also appears to be cutting back to a better distance.
#4
Raising Timber is a tough one to back with confidence,
but looks best on paper. Both of his starts at this meet were
solid and he will now drop slightly, but he has failed as the
favorite many times, and his workout pattern in advance of this
hasn’t been all that steady.
#6
Close Range got some backing in his career debut, but
stopped after dueling on the lead. Returns today off a long break
with the addition of Lasix, so let’s view him as a first
timer that has a decent pedigree and adequate morning drills in
preparation for this.
Both
handicappers picked the winner. Results
