Lord
Justice Brings the "W"
September
27TH, 2009
Loss
- Win - Loss - Win - Loss - Win - Loss - WIN!
Well that seems to be the Lord Justice plan. Lord Justice was
able to take the lead in Sunday's Big Brown Stakes, and hang on
for the win over a sloppy track. He battled Precursor at the start
of the race, and then held off Bunker Hill down the stretch.
It
seemed as though LJ was looking to his right coming down the stretch,
waiting for another horse to catch up. And when Bunker Hill appeared
to be catching up, he kicked it up a little and brought home the
win. Kind of reminded me of the way Harlem
Rocker would take the lead, and then wait for another horse
to catch him before racing for the win.
It
was good to see jockey Decarlo urging LJ around the final corner
and onto the front stretch before breaking out the whip. I thought
he had moved a little early in the Long Branch Stakes last time
out. The times between the races are pretty close. Makes me wonder
why Lord Justice did so well today and so poorly a few months
ago. And then there was the 2 month layoff. I have not heard why
there was a pause in his training and racing when most horses
from the Long Branch raced again a month latter at the Haskell.
Well,
lets hope that LJ can break the trend and win next time out. Or
at least hope that Pletcher puts him in a dud race for his next
"loss", and then on to Aqueduct for the Cigar Mile in
November.

Approx. Post: 4:50PM
Brad Thomas's Selections: Blank Check, Bunker
Hill, Precursor
Thomas Cassidy's Selections: Precursor, Blank
Check, Pitched Perfectly
1 1 Precursor This colt makes his stakes debut
this afternoon and has shown he can fire fresh. He sports a solid
record over this strip and at this distance. He will likely stalk
the early pace and could be in line for a ground saving journey.
Top choice. 5-1
2 2 Doc's Friend Heads into this race off a third-place
finish in an allowance/optional claiming event. He sports a sharp
5-furlong breeze in preparation for this event and is reunited
with Saez, who was aboard for his maiden breaking victory. This
colt has speed and will likely head toward the early lead from
the break. 3-1
3 3 Blank Check Gets back on dirt after trying
the lawn in the Grade 3 Saranac at the Spa last out. He cuts back
an eighth of a mile for his seventh start of the year and is reunited
with Lopez, who was aboard for both career wins. This colt will
likely be found sitting in behind the early leaders and is a solid
contender. 6-1
4 4 Pitched Perfectly Cuts back a sixteenth of
a mile and steps up to face stakes company after winning an allowance/optional
claiming event last out. He sports a trio of works in preparation
for his second start over this strip and will likely show early
speed from the bell. 5-2
5 5 Lord Justice Spend A Buck Stakes winner makes
his first start off the bench today. He sports a steady worktab
for his return to the races and has shown he can fire fresh. He
will likely flash early foot, but may find company on the front
end. 7-2
6 6 Bunker Hill Exits graded stakes company after
running the PA Derby last out. Last year's Continental Mile winner
sports a half-mile breeze in preparation for this event. He has
versatility and could use it to his advantage. 7-2
Best
of luck in your wagering. I will try and catch the race on TVG.
Big
Brown Stakes Sunday Sept 27th
September
25TH, 2009
Lord
Justice is entered to run this weekend at Monmouth Park in the
Big Brown Stakes. It is the 9th race, a 1 1/16 mile race on dirt.
Lord Justice has 2 wins in 3 races at this distance, the last
time out was a poor finish in the Long Branch (also at 1 1/16).
The
astute reader will notice the up and down trending of Lord Justice
and see that he is in for a good performance this time out. I
will not be making the marathon 12 hour round trip drive to see
this race, although I do like Monmouth Park. Wish he had made
it out to Saratoga this year. Actually NOBODY from ARV2 or ARV3
made it out to Saratoga this season, a little disappointing.

Racing
Again
August
27TH, 2009
We
got an update from Dave W. that Lord Justice will be racing again
this September. I was long overdue in following up on his progress.
Very few workouts since the Long Branch, and several horses in the
Long Branch, like Atomic Rain, had already raced again, while hardly
a peep out of LJ. Figured Pletcher must be busy with his horses that
are in the bigger races. Regardless I look forward to seeing how
LJ does. Following his win-poor-win-poor... showings, he is due for
a good race this time out. Interesting to see his last work was at
Belmont too...

UPDATE:
View photos from my trip to Monmouth at flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/monkeykat/
So
like I said, I had quite a road trip. Drove down to Monmouth for
the race, and to see the track, as I've never been there before.
I was pleasantly surprised that the track was quite beautiful, with
wonderful accessibility to the paddock and winners circle. The crowd
wasn't too large for the day, which I like. I arrived just after
the 4th race ended, which was a little disappointing as I wanted
to see Mister Triester run, but he didn't do well anyway.
They
do nickel and dime you at the track having you pay to park, get in,
and for the program, just a little bit here and there I guess. I'm
used to free admission and parking at my home track.
OK,
so thoughts on Lord Justice and the race. Lord Justice is much smaller
than the other horses in the race. I thought he had a chance, but
even the "experts" mostly felt that he would be beaten, even by Santana
Six who he had defeated last time out. To be fair, one of the TVG
guys had Lord Justice in his Pick 4, and picked to win, which I thought
was cool.
As
Chris Decarlo road by for the parade I shouted at him to "Race Smart",
because I felt there were a fair number of horses that would be trying
to set the speed in the race, and the last thing I wanted was LJ
to use all his energy just to try and be first, when he may be best
served settling in behind another front runner. He was also starting
to the outside, and I hoped he wouldn't race like crazy to beat everyone
to the inside. As the race unfolded, LJ did get a bit stuck on the
outside through the corners, but on the replay I was happy to see
that he made a move coming to the top of the stretch. No luck though
as the field blew by him.
No
word on how LJ came out of the race, what his next race will be,
or if he will give it a try for the Haskell against "Rachel". The
Long Branch is a prep for the Haskell. I will be in Saratoga for
opening weekend, and miss the Haskell, except by simulcast.
I
had a fun time, if not a very long day. 6.5 hrs each way, and 4 hrs
racing in between. I was happy to meet Pat who writes the handride
blog at the race. We had a good conversation before the race. Would
have been cool to see him earlier so we could have talked a bit more.
He recognized my Adena Springs hat. I
have more photos up on flickr, but here are some hosted here for
viewers to enjoy:

Why is Lord Justice
a tease? Well because he shows promise, and wins against some lower
competition, but when you get him into a bigger
race, he just can't get it done. I hope he figures it out soon. But
I'm not sure how to feel when Pletcher keeps throwing him into these
higher stakes races. Kinda fun for the ride though...
I
Think He's A Tease...

UPDATE:
I've started to upload my photos to flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/monkeykat/
Wow,
what a road trip. 16 1/2 hours, Over 755 miles, a spectacular lightning
show, and oh yeah, there was a few horse races in there too.
Lord
Justice finished 6th in what was a very competitive field in the
Long Branch S at Monmouth park Saturday July 11th. I made the trip
out to the track, my first time at Monmouth, and had a really good
time, despite the race results. I'll post some links to my photos
and share some thoughts in the coming days.
Here
is the story from Monmouth regarding the race: "Atomic
Rain Dominates Long Branch, Despite The Odds 2nd, Papa Clem 3rd;

Track Record in Battlefield"
I
must say Joe Bravo is quite the character when you see him in New
Jersey.

Racing News
July

Scanning
the news for what I can find on this race, and then some.
An
article about Atomic Rain from Monmouth
Park News Site: Breen
Has Two For The Money In Saturday's Long Branch.
Also,
a recap of the field: Papa Clem Gets Serious Haskell Test in Long
Branch Saturday
"Todd
Pletcher, who has won the Haskell twice, has Stronach Stables’ Lord
Justice in the Long Branch. The colt won the Spend a Buck Stakes
here May 30 as his prep for this event."
Monmouth
Park Blogger Brian Skirka has this interesting article about the
Battlefield Stakes race shaping up on the day: "Hotstufanthensome
vs. Silver Tree Take Five". Also mentioned towards the end of
the page: "Saturday’s
ninth race is the Long Branch Stakes –historically the prep
race for the $1 million Haskell. The race is loaded with potential
candidates for Monmouth’s premier, Grade I event including
likely Haskell starters Atomic Rain and Papa Clem. “Team Rachel
Alexandra” will send out the up-and-coming Omniscient in his
third career stakes effort. Jockey Calvin Borel will be in town to
ride for trainer Steve Asmussen and owner Jess Jackson, so bring
your cameras if you want a shot of him throughout the day. All in
all, the Long Branch looks like a wide-open affair with fourth-place
Kentucky Derby finisher Papa Clem the 2-1 morning line favorite."
Race
Reviews has the race shaping up as follows (Link probably only
good for a day or two):
Race Type: STK
Distance: One Mile And One Sixteenth
Conditions: FOR THREE-YEAR-OLDS. By subscription of $100 each, which should accompany
the nomination and $1,500 to pass the entry box. Weight: 123 lbs. Non-winners
of $60,000 at a mile or over in 2009 allowed 2 lbs.; A sweepstakes anytime, 4
lbs.; Two races other than maiden or claiming, 6 lbs. The winning owner to receive
a trophy. Closed Saturday, June 27, 2009 with 21 nominations.
Available Wagering: Win, Place and Show
Morning Line Selections: 5-2-3-4
Approx. Post: 4:50PM
Brad Thomas's Selections: Omniscient, Atomic Rain, Papa Clem,
Thomas Cassidy's Selections: Santana Six, Atomic Rain, Papa Clem,
1 1 Santana Six: Spend A Buck Stakes runner-up
looks to turn the tables on Lord Justice today. He sports a bullet work at the
Spa in preparation for this event
and gets the rail for the second consecutive start. He goes out for a jockey/trainer
combo that wins at nearly a 20% clip and will likely sit close to the pace. Top
choice. 9-2
1a 7 Nowhere to Hide: This colt loses the blinkers for
his MP debut. He sports a pair of bullet works heading into this event and makes
his sixth start of the
year. He may settle off the pace and could be heard from late if the opening
splits are fast. 9-2
2 2 Atomic Rain: Sports a pair of bullet works in preparation
for his return to stakes company. He heads into this event off a victory in his
first start since
running in the Kentucky Derby. This colt tries this distance for the second time
and will likely settle in behind the early leaders for a solid jockey/trainer
combo. Contender. 3-1
2x 8 Rapid Redux: Gets the outside post for his return to stakes company after
running in an entry-level allowance event last out. He sports a sharp 5-furlong
work for his second try against stakes foes. He goes out for a jockey/trainer
combo that is 1-for-2 and will likely show early foot from the gate. 3-1
3 3 Despite the Odds: Tries today's distance for the first time after winning
the off-the-turf Grade 3 Hill Prince by more than 7 lengths last out. This colt
sports a pair of works for his first start over this strip. He will likely show
early speed and could prove himself tough with a repeat of his last effort. 7-2
4 4 Omniscient: Exits Grade 3 company for his second start off the layoff. He
sports a trio of works since his last outing and makes his first start over this
strip. He gets this year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winning rider in the
irons and will likely be found sitting in behind the early leaders. 4-1
5 5 Papa Clem: Grade 2 winner makes his first start since running in the Preakness.
He sports a 5-furlong breeze over this strip in preparation for his MP debut.
He has never finished worse than second at this distance and could use his versatility
to his advantage. 2-1
6 6 Lord Justice: Heads into this event off a wire-to-wire victory in the Spend
A Buck Stakes. He sports a trio of works heading into this event as he looks
to make it 2-for-2 over this strip. He has early speed and will likely try to
take this field wire-to-wire. 6-1
Lord
Justice Racing this Weekend
July
9TH, 2009
We
got word that Lord Justice will be racing at Monmouth Park this weekend.
He is entered in the 9th race on Saturday, July 11th. The race is
the Long Branch S. at Monmouth Park on
Saturday, July 11th. The Long Branch is a $175,000, 1 1/16 mile race
for 3
yr. old colts. He has drawn post position 6 and will be ridden by
Chris
Decarlo, who was on board for Lord Justice's recent victory in the
Spend A
Buck S. Post time is around 4:50 pm.
Other
horses in this race include Papa Clem, Atomic Rain, and Santana Six,
who Lord Justice beat in the Spend A Buck. On paper, I love how this
race shapes up. I'll be making a road trip day outta this one, driving
down from Western NY in the morning and back at night most likely.

Training
at Monmouth
July
1ST, 2009
Lord
Justice came out of the last race in good shape and continues to
train at Monmouth. Looking forward to seeing what the summer holds
for this horse. I just got 4 tickets to the Travers Stakes this summer
in Saratoga, but I'll be there a few more weekends too. Could a return
be in order? (Recall Lord Justice's debut race was at Saratoga August
25th, 2008)
I'll
take Lord Justice for the Win
May
30TH, 2009
I
just got done watching the race on TVG, and boy was I impressed.
A much better trip then last time out at the Wood Memorial. Of course
once again, when I watch TVG the race I want to see gets bumped for
coverage of another race, and I miss out on the analysts thoughts
on an Adena Springs horse.
No
matter, Lord Justice made his way to the front after starting from
post position 5. He posted some decent times at 22.6 and 45.86 for
opening fractions. He was unhurried in the beginning of the race,
then got some competition from Santana Six down the stretch. They
seemed to battle back and forth a bit, but Lord Justice hung on and
took the win. I expected a threat from Bunker Hill, but it never
materialized. The pack got a bit bottled up coming around the turn,
and some of the horses got forced wide.
Well,
good race by Lord Justice. I wasn't sure what to expect after the
Wood Memorial. Not sure how much of his performance was related to
the thumps, how much was the longer distance, and the competition.
I liked this race much better. I hope he has a strong summer. I'd
love to see this horse at Saratoga this year. I'll
be there several weekends.

Race
Story from Monmouth:
"Lord
Justice gained command soon after the start and cut out fractions
of :22 3/5, and :45 4/5. He turned into the stretch with the lead
after six furlongs in 1:10 and opened a clear lead at the eighth
pole. Santana Six cut into the margin, but was no real threat to
the winner.
This was the
second win of the year in three starts for Lord Justice, a bay
colt by A.P.
Indy – Buy the Sport, by Devil’s Bag.
It was the first stakes win for the Stronach homebred.
“I was surprised and worried when I saw the fractions,” said
Anthony Sciametta Jr., Pletcher’s assistant at Monmouth. “This
horse has been training really well in the morning, and he showed it
today.”
“I was told to hit the half in 48 seconds and I went in 45,” DeCarlo
said. “The horse was just going so easily that it didn’t
seem that fast. He was comfortable the whole way and very relaxed on
the lead. He had his ears pricked the whole way around.”"

Tesio...
Nope, not this year
April
30TH, 2009
I
looked up the entries for the Tesio Stakes on Saturday, and no Lord
Justice. Then I checked my inbox and had this email from Dave W.
on his condition and plans:
"Lord
Justice was not entered in the Tesio S., Pletcher said that he developed
a "mild leg irritation" yesterday and decided to pass on
the race. He is planning on working LJ on Sunday, and will determine
where/when he will run next after that work. Most likely looking
at something at Monmouth."
My
friend Mark from NJ will be glad to see him race Monmouth.
So
on with Derby weekend, goooooo Chocolate Candy!
