Lord
Justice Condition Update
April
12TH, 2009
We
got word from Dave W about Lord Justice's condition following the
Wood Memorial and some potential future plans.
"Lord
Justice is doing well now, but he did have a case of the thumps after
the race which probably explains his poor finish. 'The Thumps' is
the common name for a condition called asynchronous diaphragmatic
flutter. It is caused by an electrolyte imbalance and
is usually seen in a horse after strenuous exercise or after a race.
As of now, the tentative plan for LJ is to point towards the Tesio
Stakes at Pimlico. It is a 1 1/8 mile race that is going to be run
on May 2nd."
The Federico Tesio Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held
annually at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Contested over
a distannce of one and one-eighth miles on dirt, it is open to three-year-olds
horses.
Run during the latter part
of April, the race can be a stepping stone to the second leg of the
U.S. Triple Crown series, the Preakness Stakes.
Previous Winners
of the Tesio Stakes include Icabad Crane and Ah Day. The purse is
$125,000. Source: Wikipedia I may be in
Washington for business May 4th, so perhaps an early visit
to
the
track
is possible? Doubtful, but I guess we will have a horse racing on
Derby
Day after all. ;)
Hey...
Not that Bad?
April
6TH, 2009
Now
that I've had a night to sleep and digest my whirlwind weekend, I
had time to review the race replays. The more I watch the race, the
better I feel about Lord Justice's run. He did what he had to do,
and even held with the leaders a bit down the front stretch before
fading.
I've
been able to review my photos, and posted a few in my Wood
Memorial Gallery.
Out
Raced, Out Run, Out Classed
April
5TH, 2009
Well,
if the race was 3/4 as long, we might have had a winner. Lord Justice
finished next to last Saturday in the Wood Memorial, won by I Want
Revenge, as most expected. I attended the race, and had a good time
with my friends, despite losing a bit of money betting.
Lord
Justice looked good in the paddock area, unlike Imperial Council,
who was wicked jumpy, and managed to topple himself over. I thought
that the track may suit LJ today, as they appeared to be slowing
it down a bit with the graters before the race.
LJ
had some good fractions, but when it came to the stretch run, the
field just blew by him. Oh, well, it was a good run. 3 days, 1000+
miles and 4 states later, my road trip is over.

Lord Justice is a Sleeper
April
3RD, 2009
The odds are up,
and Lord Justice appears at 15-1. Its going to be one of those races,
when they turn for the stretch, can LJ hang on, or will the field
blow by him, or how much of the field will blow by him. I hope it
works out for the best, but hoping for not 1 but 2 favored horses
to have a bad trip can be a little much to ask for.
Dave Liften's Race
Analysis:
Ninth Race
1. I Want Revenge 2. Imperial Council 3. West Side Bernie
I WANT
REVENGE matched previous Beyer top first time wearing blinkers in
R.B. Lewis, then rated kindly and drew off with authority first
time on dirt in Gotham; closing response in CashCall Futurity shows
he can sit a stalking trip if some combination of ATOMIC RAIN, LORD
JUSTICE and JUST A COINCIDENCE establish strong pace. IMPERIAL COUNCIL
lacked room and dropped back soon after the break, was unhurried
toward rear and closed with good courage to get second final strides
of Gotham, though I Want Revenge was long gone; has every right to
make it closer second time routing. WEST SIDE BERNIE ran big off
synthetic-to-dirt switch in Delta Jackpot vs. Big Drama (who has
finished first in last six, including track-record Swale); beaten
favorite on Polytrack in Lane's End may bounce back.
Well, at least LJ got a mention in this one, not much word in an news
about Lord Justice.
Well, I am headed
out for the weekend, hope to see some Justice fans at the track Saturday.
I'll post a report and pictures when I get home Sunday night.
No
Joke, Lord Justice Racing in the Wood Memorial
April
1ST, 2009
Well the roller
coaster week for Lord Justice is in full swing. Today when the entries
were announced for the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, we saw none other
than Lord Justice amongst the entries. Lord Justice will face a field
of eight on Saturday April 4th in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial ($750,000)
at Aqueduct.
From ESPN.com,
Seven
to Challenge 'Revenge' in the Wood:
"Lord
Justice was cross-entered in Saturday's Illinois Derby but his
trainer, Todd
Pletcher, said he will run in the Wood. Pletcher said his plan is
to instruct jockey C.C. Lopez to put his horse on the lead. "Just
looking at the pace scenario we felt he could be the controlling
speed,'' Pletcher said."
Most Pundits have
I Want Revenge as the favorite after an 8 1/2 length victory in the
Gotham with a Beyer of 113. Ridden by Joe Talamo (Jockeys Reality
show), he is listed as the 4-5 favorite with Imperial Council second
at 2-1.
I
Want Revenge
recently
had
50% purchased
by IEAH, they same group that owned Big Brown. A knock on I Want
Revenge... he will be flown in from Hollywood for the race. Keep
in mind everyone is giving this race to I Want Revenge, who's earnings
over 7 races are 2 - 1- 4 for $366K.
Blood Horse rates
the field (except for Lord Justice) in this article I
Want Revenge the one to beat:
"Will
I Want Revenge show the same brilliance he did when romping to
an 8 1/2-length victory
in the Gotham (gr. III)? Is Gotham runner-up Imperial Council poised
to turn the tables on his rival? Or will one of the other intriguing
starters stamp themselves as a major Triple Crown contender?"
NYRA gives its
rundown
of the racing day with this mention of Lord Justice:
"...and
Stronach Stable’s
Lord Justice, a son of 1992 Belmont Stakes winner and Horse of the
Year A.P. Indy, is also a speedster who has won two of four career
starts for trainer Todd Pletcher. Lord Justice is also entered in
Saturday’s Illinois derby at Hawthorne Racecourse, where he
drew post 3 of 11..."

It should prove
to be quite a day of racing at the Big A, with multiple stakes races
going on. Expect to see Cool Coal Man and Giant Moon in the Excelsior
Grade 3 and Tale of Ekati and Kodiak Kowboy in the Grade 1 Carter
Handicap.
I plan on attending
the race, and hope to get some great pictures, and see Lord Justice
win.
Lord
Justice to Illinois Derby or Wood Memorial?
March
31ST, 2009
Hawthorne Race
Track has news today of eleven entries for the $500,000 Grade 2 Illinois
Derby to be run on Saturday April 4th. Lord Justice is among the
11 entries, along with two other Pletcher horses (Al Khali and Il
Postino). The favorite is Musket Man (7-2), with Giant Oak (9-2),
an Illinois bred 'Local' out of Giant's Causeway getting a fair amount
of press. Great Oak has yet to win over a dirt surface. Read the full
article from Hawthorne's Web Site.
"...Horses
from some of the top stables in the nation will compete, most attempting
to
acquire enough graded earnings to qualify for the Run for the Roses.
The winner’s share of $300,000 would assure that money will
be no issue for those planning a trip to Churchill Downs.Todd
Pletcher brings three horses to the party, among them the highly
touted Al Khali and Lord Justice; Ken McPeek has entered Free Country;
and Nick Zito supplemented Nowhere to Hide at a cost of $10,000 as
he continues to seek a 2009 Kentucky Derby contender..."
Morning line odds
for Lord Justice at Hawthorne are 8-1. I didn't even know they made
the draw this early. Some pundits have this race picked as wide open.
I like Lord Justice's chances after his showing last race.
NTRA posted this
article about Todd
Pletcher's three entries for the Illinois Derby. "...The
entries just kept coming for Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Illinois
Derby, and when the race finally closed mid-Monday afternoon at
Hawthorne, a surprisingly large field of 11 had been assembled.
Seven or
thereabouts had been expected over the weekend, but several
other horses materialized Monday, adding to the race's core of
Musket Man, Giant Oak, and whatever trainer Todd Pletcher was sending. Pletcher
was said to have two horses for the race, but wound up putting
in three.
Al Khali is an interesting Peruvian import; Lord
Justice won an entry-level, two-turn Aqueduct allowance race last
month; and Il Postino is an improbable-looking $20,000 maiden-claiming
winner..."
Brisnet for
Lord Justice in the Illinois Derby from ToddPletcherRacing.com:
PDF File
But,
not so fast? An earlier article from NTRA.com on Imperial
Council's tune up for the
Wood Memorial (3/30/2009) mentions Lord Justice as being 50-50 for
the race, according to trainer Todd Pletcher.
"...The
Wood lost one player on Monday as the connections of Danger to
Society
have
opted to run in the $1 million Arkansas Derby. The Wood might pick
up one starter as Lord Justice is now "50-50" to run, according
to trainer Todd Pletcher. Lord Justice, who won a first-level allowance
race here March 6, was entered in Saturday's Illinois Derby..."
Lest we not forget
that Lord Justice won his last race at Aqueduct wire-to-wire earlier
this month. Lord Justice worked out today at Belmont, turning in
a 47:84 over 4 furlongs distance. Good for 5/59 on the day.
So there you have
it, or not.
Lord
Justice News 2
March
28TH, 2009
My buddy Mark sent
me this link from NTRA where Lord Justice is mentioned along with
a few other of Pletcher's horses on the derby trail.
From NTRA - Pletcher's
Derby Prospects Spread Out:
"Pletcher
said he's looking at either the Arkansas Derby or Lexington for Join
in the Dance and the Illinois Derby for Lord Justice. Join in the
Dance turned in a surprisingly good effort finishing second behind
Musket Man when stretching out around two turns for the first time
in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby. Lord Justice is coming off an impressive
allowance victory in his 3-year-old debut at Aqueduct."
Boy it sure would
be great if Lord Justice turned into a derby contender.
Lord
Justice News Blurbs
March
23RD, 2009
Here's a few quick
hits about Lord Justice out there on the internet.
From NYBreds.com regarding
Lord Justice's win at Aqueduct March 6th:
"Followers
of New York bloodlines might have noticed something familiar about
the winner of the eighth race at Aqueduct on Friday, a mile and a
sixteenth allowance/optional claiming contest for three-year-olds,
which Stronach Stables' homebred Lord Justice won in gate-to-wire
fashion by 2-1/4 lengths. Lord Justice is the first offspring produced
from Georgica Stable's (Peter Minikes), Stephen Mack's, and Andrew
Rosen's NYTB 2003 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, BUY THE SPORT, who
along with Funny Cide and Whitmore's Conn was one of three New York-bred
Grade 1 winners in 2003. Frank Stronach had paid $1,150,000 for Buy
the Sport at Keeneland's 2005 November sale when she was carrying
Lord Justice; he sold her two years later at Keeneland in November
for $1.4-million."
And from an article
on Derby Contenders (of which Lord Justice wasn't listed), but he
got this mention:
"Though
this Adena runner is blossoming late, Lord Justice popped a 91
Beyer in an impressive
win versus a very good field last week at The Big A…he may
make some noise in stakes company before Derby Day, but may be a
3yo to really get moving this summer at Saratoga."
Some starts at
Saratoga this Summer are A-OK by me.
Lord
Justice Pointed Towards Illinois Derby
March
21ST, 2009
We
just got word from Dave W. that Lord Justice will be pointed towards
the Illinois Derby on April 4th at Hawthorne, just outside of Chicago.
The Illinois Derby is a Kentucky Derby prep race over 1 1/8th miles
on Dirt. It is a Grade II Stakes race with a purse of $500,000. Lord
Justice was not one of the early nominees for the race which include
Friesan Fire, Old Fashioned, and Uno Mas among many others.
It
is a big step up in class, and regardless of where he finishes we
will know a lot more about Lord Justice after the race.
Entries
for the Illinois Derby: PDF File
Along
the same lines, I found some other races that Lord Justice was nominated
for, but not entered in.

Enjoy, and I'll try and post any more updates on Lord Justice as I
get them.
Lord Justice's
win this month also got a mention on ESPN in this Countdown
to the Crown article.
"It was
a good week for the Pletcher barn, which also scored with last
Friday's
Aqueduct allowance winner LORD JUSTICE. The Stronach home-bred is
regally bred by A.P. Indy out of G1 Gazelle winner Buy the Sport,
and handled his business wire-to-wire with a soft pace set-up."
Lord
Justice Wins 2009 Debut
March
6TH, 2009
Lord
Justice won his 2009 debut race. I was surprised to see that he had
had such a layoff. The other horses in the field had last raced 20-30
days ago, but there was Lord Justice with a whopping 138 day lay
off. As the day wore on, I was liking his chances more and more.
I set up our DVR to record the race on TVG and raced home from work
without looking up any information on the race.
Lord
Justice took the lead at the start, and held it around the corner
when the other horses started to kick it into higher gear. LJ just
kept going and Lopez did a great job keeping him on the rail and
in the front. A great win, and great payday for those willing to
take a chance.
 Horses
that lead from the start make me nervous because I always think they
will get caught, but horses that stalk the field make me nervous
because I never think they will catch up! I am just always nervous
I guess. Great win though. I am optimistic to see where this goes
this summer. Any race at Saratoga I hope.

Still hoping for
the official word that LJ came out of the race A-OK.
Lord
Justice Racing Friday March 6th
March
5TH, 2009
Lord
Justice is entered to run in Race 8 at Aqueduct Raceway (The Big
A) on Friday March 6th. The race details: It is an ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL
CLAIMING. 1 1/16 Mile Dirt. Purse $46,000.
Past
Performances are available from Todd
Pletcher Racing.
DRF Analyst Dave
Liften has this to say from DRF:
Eighth Race
1. Tap Man 2. Haitian Sensation 3. Cellar Dweller
TAP MAN overcame post 11 for maiden win first time going long; rated
early and raced erratically in the lane when brought back for 3YO
bow, so addition of blinkers may help. HAITIAN SENSATION has run
well all three routes on the inner track, moves inside after maiden
win from post 8; inching forward on the numbers. CELLAR DWELLER was
no match for the streaking Haynesfield in the Whirlaway, but finished
gamely to be a clear second; came back with a sharp 5f breeze in
59.60 10 days later. MAJHOOD was far back in sprint debut, but then
was bet strongly for route comeback off some fast works, and didn't
disappoint; continues to train well.
He's obviously
read his Brisnet and is going with the Track Bias stats for Speed
E/P. I hope for a good showing from Lord Justice, and will hit the
OTB window some time Friday. Good Luck Lord Justice!
